Swiss: FIFA official is extradited to the U.S.
Authorities in Switzerland say the first of seven FIFA officials arrested in May on racketeering and bribery charges has been extradited to the US, according to Reuters.
In a brief statement on Thursday, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice said that the official detained in a US corruption investigation into the world soccer’s governing body was extradited on Wednesday.
The justice office did not name the official.
“He was handed over to a three-man US police escort in Zurich who accompanied him on the flight to New York,” justice office said.
A source told Reuters last week Jeffrey Webb, a former FIFA vice president and president of the CONCACAF regional soccer federation, had agreed to be extradited to the United States to face corruption charges.
Al Jazeera could not independently verify the identity of the person.
