Nigeria’s Aishah Ajibola Olabiyi has been crowned the winner of  the 2013  Muslim beauty pageant held on September 18, 2013 in Jakarta, Indonesia . This is super cool!  I actually didn’t know that there was such a thing as Muslim Beauty Pageant. The beauty competition which is was established back in 2011 is organized to show the world that there is more to Islam than poverty and terrorism. The idea behind this, said the organizers is to bring awareness to the world that Muslims are beautiful in their own way. The competition is  open to any Muslim lady between the ages of 18-27.

“We’re just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful,” she told AFP before the start oof the finals.

“This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” she told AFP.

“But it’s about more than Miss World. Muslim women are increasingly working in the entertainment industry in a sexually explicit way, and they become role models, which is a concern.”

“Our women are sholeha [pious], smart, and stylish,” Ms Shanti said. “They are an answer to those who only equate Islam with poverty and terrorism.”

The women were judged based on piety and Islamic knowledge and skills, such as recitation of the Qur’an.

Nigeria’s Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola ultimately triumph over 19 other contestant and subsequently crowned the 2013 World Muslimah Beauty. Congratulations to Aisha!
