Senator Bukola Saraki has been elected as the Senate President of the 8th National Assembly. He has been sworn in.
Saraki was elected unopposed even as its main rival Sen. Ahmad Lawan and his supporters were absent at the sitting.
Detail of what transpired at the session is yet unclear, the election of Saraki has put paid on the APC leadership decision to field Lawan as its sole candidate for the seat.
The election of the Deputy President of the Senate has been held and Senator Ike Ekweremadu defeated Senator Ali Ndume.with 54 to 20 votes of the 75 votes cast. Senator Ekweremadu was immediately sworn in.
Senator Ekweremadu who was the deputy senate president under former Senate President David Mark has retained his seat even as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
