The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has urged nurses to educate mothers on the need to consume healthy foods to prevent diseases and nutrient lost.
Mrs Buhari made the call at the 27th Annual National Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the Professional Association of Public Health Nursing Officers of Nigeria (PAPHNON), in Abuja on Tuesday.
Aisha, represented by the wife of Nasarawa State Governor, Mairo Al-Makura, said it had become necessary to create public awareness on healthy foods to promote good health.
The President’s wife said the theme of the conference: Public Health Nursing Practice; Promoting Nutrition and Food Safety in Nigeria, was apt.
“The theme is apt, especially at this time when the family unit, more ever than before, should be aware and conscious of what its members consume.
“We are particularly in an era when food nutrients are being lost through various methods of processing, storage and eating of junk foods as a result of the presence of many fast food outlets.’’
According to her, these processes have deprived people, especially women and children, of the required nutrients for the maintenance of good health.
She urged the nurses to collaborate with stakeholders in the health sector to add value to the health care delivery system of the country.
“I am sure that this conference will afford you yet another opportunity to review your roles, achievements and challenges in meeting the health needs of people in your area of operation’’, Aisha said.
She urged them to take the deliberations seriously in order to translate them into action in their various places of work.
The wife of the president commended the organisers for their roles towards actualising better health for Nigerian citizens.
Public health nurses carry out immunisation, demonstration of nutrition and food, maternal, child and reproductive health.
Others are family planning and training of traditional birth attendants among others.
Highlight of the occasion was the launching of a book titled: Fundamentals of Public Health Nursing and Clinical Services.
