Tragedy struck on Monday at the national security summit in Abuja as the lead speaker for the occasion, Dr. Kelvin Nwosu slumped and died during the event in Abuja.
The event was organised by the Nigerian Police in conjunction with the SUN newspaper.
Dr. Nwosu, a lawyer and legal consultant had delivered a power-point presentation which attracted a standing ovation from the capacity-filled International Conference Centre venue.
He was walking back to his seat even as the next speaker, Oba Bolarinwa Adedokun, the Kabiyesi of Oke-Ila, mounted the stage to review the paper, when Nwosu slumped.
Doctors in house rushed to the scene to attend to a man whose thunderous ovation was has deafened the entire hall.
About 15 minutes Nwosu was rushed out of the hall in a stretcher and taken to National Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Hospital sources told News Investigators that “he was “dead on arrival.”
Speaking earlier at the event, President Muhammadu Buhari had announced plan to recruit additional 10,000 police officers to boost youth employment and security in the country.
Buhari said government will in addition establish a properly trained and equipped Federal Anti-Terrorism Multi-Agency Task Force that will effectively address the challenge of future insurgency in the country.
He said the government is also working to enhance the operational capacity of officers of the police force through training programmes that will give them the right civil orientation in their roles as guardians of the constitution.
He further said that his administration will extend the CCTV Monitoring System to major cities and towns across Nigeria, adding that the police would also be made more accountable.
The president said his administration will further explore the possibility of policing that would integrate members of the community especially at the grassroot level.
“It is my high expectation that this National Security Summit will develop pathways for the attainment of this policy focus of the new administration” he said.
“These initiatives, if properly implemented, will undoubtedly address those factors that threaten public confidence in the Police and hence, create good grounds for the practice of community-led policing to flourish. I am tasking the police not only to “say” but to “do” as we are promising to Nigerians” he said.
Earlier the Inspector General of Police had Solomon Arase called for community driven policing as an alternative to effectively curbing insecurity within Nigeria as well tackle inadequate man power profile in the Nigeria Police Force.
