A student of Government Science Secondary School (GSSS), Gombe state, wrote his first paper for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from the isolation centre on Monday.

The Gombe state Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) disclosed this via a tweet.

It said the candidate, whose identity was concealed, was admitted on Sunday after he tested positive for COVID-19.

The centre said the state prioritises both health and education, hence efforts were made to see that the candidate took his mathematics examination.

A picture posted by the centre showed an invigilator fully kitted in personal protective equipment supervising  the student as he wrote his examination.

“Health and education are a priority in Gombe State. A final year student of GSSS Gombe tested POSITIVE for COVID-19 and was isolated yesterday, today he is writing Mathematics SSCE while ensuring his invigilator is well protected,” the tweet read.

The 2020 examination, which was scheduled for May, was postponed indefinitely in April because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But on August 4, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) announced that the examination would commence on August 17 and end on September 12.

There have been concerns over the safety of students and their teachers during the examination.
