First Bank Nigeria

The police on Tuesday arrested Abdullahi Krishi, house of representatives correspondent of Daily Trust.

Dele Olaoye, national assembly divisional crime officer (DCO), had stormed the media centre inside the national assembly complex around 12pm on Tuesday, demanding to see Krishi.

Olaoye subsequently handed over the reporter to some operatives who whisked him into an unmarked Toyota Hilux SUV and sped off.

It is not clear why he was arrested but there are reports that Muhammad Badaru, governor of Jigawa state, is behind it.

The governor was said to have been miffed over a story the reporter wrote about him.

Some of the reporters who witnessed the arrest quoted the officers as saying there is a complaint that Krishi wrote a defamatory story against a governor.

They also said the office of the clerk of the national assembly is aware of the matter.

When contacted, Nurudeen Abdallah, head of investigations at Daily Trust, told TheCable that the newspaper will soon release a statement regarding the incident.

Krishi’s arrest comes a week after Tony Ezimakor, Abuja bureau chief of Independent Newspaper, was released after being detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters for over five days, over a story he published.
